Create a Research Project Page

  • FrontPage 2003 will open up and will prompt you for your username, password and domain (domain will be blucher/username)

  • The page should open up in FP 2003 now.

  • In the menu, go to “View” and make sure that “Page” and “Folder List” are both selected. (See screen shot on next page to see what the program looks like when these two views are selected.

  • Let’s go ahead and make this page yours. On the left in the folder structure right click once on “Research Projects”. With the menu that appears, select “New” 4 “Folder”

  • This new folder will appear in the structure, and all you have to do is type the new name over the “New Folder” that is automatically highlighted. You can look at the other project folders there to get an idea of what to name it. I suggest making it short and use no spaces. In the example screen shot below I have name the folder “MyProject”

·         Now you can save your page as the default page under this folder: In the FrontPage Menu at the top, go to “File” 4 “Save As”. In the file window that appears, open your project folder and save the file as “default.htm”. It is important that you save the file in the correct place, or you may override crucial pages on the website.

·         It might be a good idea for you to look at the other research project pages to get an idea of what to put there. The template page is already formatted with the standard look, feel and content that the research pages follow. All you have to do now is replace the instruction text with your content. From now on, when you save your page, it will automatically be published on the web as you save.

A Note on Hyperlinks:

You’ll want to have hyperlinks on your page. A hyperlink can be to a webpage, an email address, or a file. They all work the same. You can choose the “Target Frame” for a hyperlink, which simply means the place that it will open. You can have your file/page open in a new window (I recommend this for links outside of the CBI website as well as pdf files/powerpoint files etc). The default setting is that the page or file will open in the same window. This is a pain sometimes when people are viewing files or going to outside links because they have to keep hitting back in order to get back to the page they started on.

How to Make a Hyperlink that Opens in a New Window:

·         Type the text that will become an underlined hyperlink.

·         Highlight this text, and right click on it

·         From the resulting menu, select “Hyperlink”

·         A window will appear allowing you to choose the destination. If the file or page is within the CBI website structure, you can simply “surf” to it through the file menu in that window. If it is an outside link then you can simply type the web address of the site.

·         Now click the “Target Frame” button in the same window and select “New Window”. Hit OK and you should see that your link is underlined. Once you have added your content and saved your page, it is a good idea to surf to the page and check that your hyperlinks work. Below are several screenshots that demonstrate the steps above. I’ve used Hydrolab as an example.

Once you have finished your research project page, you need to make a link on the main Research Project page to your page. To do this, in the menu left, open up the “Research Projects” folder, and then the file “default.htm”. Type the name of your project on the page and make a hyperlink to it. Don’t worry about Target Frames, since the link is to another page within the CBI site. Once have hyperlinked your research project page, simply save the main page and you are done.
